Travel Lust: Romantic Getaways

October is my favorite month period. I love it even more than my own birth month (March) primarily because it seems that everything amazing happens in October. On the 27th of this month, in fact, is my 3 year wedding anniversary which I am incredibly thankful and excited about. So it dawned on me today that I should showcase a few places I’d like to travel with my husband to and have a lovely vacation. I’ve written about sustainable and biodynamic wine before (here) and how fantastic it is because if I’m going to indulge I’d love for it to be organic. I came across the beautiful winery MacRostie Winery and Vineyards while I was checking out vineyards in Sonoma and Napa and I’m fully ready to pack a suitcase and go. Local Restaurants – Amy’s Drive Thru Ca’Momi Farmstead Restaurant For some unknown reason I have such a draw to Cape Cod. Maybe it’s the preppy vibe located perfectly on the water or the fact that I’m married to a New Englander – either …

Sustainable Stories of Indigo

Anyone that’s been in my home as of late can’t help but notice the gluttonous stack of unread magazines sitting on the coffee table. They come in the mail or I see them in the market and the pile grows large and larger waiting to one day be read. Well, a couple of weekends ago I finally got around to tackling the stack of magazines and I was reminded why I don’t just need social media as my only information outlet. Whilst reading a Martha Stewart magazine from July (ehem) I came across the most amazing article on an artist couple’s mission to bring the historic and sustainable practice of indigo-dyeing to America. Chinami and Rowland Ricketts are the artists behind Ricketts Indigo a company that specializes in art and textiles using traditional ways to naturally make dye. With their Indiana farm Chinami and Rowland grow indigo and produce dye that is completely free of petroleum and chemicals that pollute the earth.  From the March seedlings to the two harvests during the summer to the …

Eco-Friendly Lawn & Garden Care

My husband and I enjoy spending as much time as possible outside which is why it’s a non-negotiable to have an organic pesticide-free lawn. We simply would not feel comfortable playing in the yard with our dog or spending an afternoon grilling out if our lawn and garden were full of nasty, toxic chemicals. I have put together my favorite products for lawn and garden maintenance that are pesticide-free, organic and eco-friendly. If we all quit using toxins that destroy the Earth, our own personal health and that of our loved ones (pets included) we would live in a much less polluted world. It’s the small tweaks over time that make a difference and it’s easy for even the brownest thumbed person to adopt. Bee-Friendly Flowers – Bees are an integral part of our eco-system and as the world declines in their habitat the inventory of bees has shrunken to frighteningly lows. We simply cannot live in this world without the bee. These tiny little insects pollinate flowers, vegetables, fruits and seeds and keep our …

Wellness Wednesday: Greenwashing

Ever heard of greenwashing? This term has been something that’s made me stand up and pay attention as of late. One of the reasons I love this blog so much is that it gives me an outlet to bring awareness to things that aren’t mainstream so others can stand up and pay attention as well. There’s so much convoluted information out there and so the ability to hide and disguise is, sadly, all too easy. The most frustrating part of this for me is seeing all the trickery that’s played on unsuspecting consumers who are simply trying to live responsibly. So what is greenwashing? Greenwashing is defined by the Greenwashing Index as: It’s greenwashing when a company or organization spends more time and money claiming to be “green” through advertising and marketing than actually implementing business practices that minimize environmental impact. And Greenpeace defines greenwashing as: Used to describe the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service. Tips to avoid greenwashing: Look …

Holiday Lust: SHA Wellness Clinic

A couple of months ago I was reading Organic Spa Magazine and I came across the most perfect of perfect retreats. The SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, Spain is in fact that place. Could you imagine taking a wellness sojourn to Spain?! Well, let me just say that I can and I want to go here! Rated one of the best international spas in 2015, the SHA Wellness Clinic is so much more than a spa. With a focus on sustainability, this luxury spa hones in on health and supports everything from stress relief to weight loss to overcoming tobacco addiction. The location itself is absolutely gorgeous (see above) and is, in and of itself, its own vacation destination. If adventure and activities are your thing there’s no reason to be relegated just to the Clinic, in fact, there are an array of options that SHA can organize for you. Beaches, leisure and sports activities, shopping, culture the town is flush with possibilities. The Resort’s grounds are beautifully designed by Carlos Gilardi and Elvira Blanco …

Must Have Kitchen Items

Aside from my bedroom I probably spend the most time in my kitchen. I love to cook and concoct new recipes for everything from smoothies to juices to dinners and desserts. I am often asked what my favorite kitchen items are so I thought this would be the perfect day to share exactly what I cannot live without.  1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 1. Vitamix – Without a doubt my absolute favorite appliance in my kitchen is my Vitamix Blender. I use it literally every day at least once. This is the Taj Mahal of blenders, there simply is not one that’s better. Plus it’s super easy to clean which always makes life easier. Yes, it’s outrageously expensive but I assure you it’s worth every single penny. 2. Le Creuset Dutch Oven – I received this as a wedding gift and no offense to my other gifts but this may be my favorite of the lot. It’s perfect for making basically anything and …
