Berry Tart Smoothie

Lately, I can’t get enough of tart flavors and thus created the tartest of smoothies to satisfy my cravings. Something I’ve been attempting to do is pay closer to attention to my body and what it’s asking me to give it. It’s not always the easiest to tune in and pay attention especially when sugar or alcohol or processed food (no one is perfect) is calling to me, but I’m doing my best. Red fruits galore have been catching me eye in the market so this smoothie combined with the tart flavor is really hitting the spot. Most associate cranberries as a way to ward off a UTI but actually they also slow tumor growth, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and promote gum health. I’ve never used them in a smoothie until recently and I’m kind of in love now. And just for good measure I’ve added in some superfoods for an extra kick. This smoothie is ideal for post workout nourishment and requires zero prep, simply throw it all in a blender and …

Spicy Green Smoothie

I am a gigantic smoothie addict and will drink one to two a day year round, but often times in the winter it can be mighty tough to drink a cold smoothie when the temperature outside is 25 degrees. I’ve even attempted to eat something warm in the morning like overnight oats but for me it’s just not as satisfying as a beautiful vitamin and mineral rich smoothie. That’s why my favorite remedy for the winter cold is putting heat into my smoothie. No I don’t mean I heat up my kale smoothie, that would be disgusting. Actually I add in heat inducing ingredients like ginger and jalapeno to give my body a warm boost. My favorite smoothie as of late (cue sub-zero temperatures) has been my Spicy Green Smoothie. While jalapeno may not be to everyone’s taste like it is mine you can always double up the ginger to still get that warming feeling in the morning. The ingredients in this smoothie are super rich in minerals, enzymes and vitamins making it the perfect …

Almond Milk Recipe

Let it be said here – once you make your own nut milk you will never buy the store packaged stuff again. Not only is most store bought nut milk kept fresh with additives and preservatives but let’s be honest, it tastes horribly. Why buy it when it’s so easy to make? The great thing about making your own milk is that you can tailor it entirely to your taste and specifications. Almond milk in particular makes a great neutral base for cooking or blending. Almonds are loaded with vitamins, minerals and healthy unsaturated fats. The fact that they’re high in protein, fiber and calcium makes them a perfect snack to eat on the go. There is nothing worse than a blood sugar crash and these little nut beauties keep you going in a pinch. Nutritional Facts – Vitamin E Potassium Calcium Magnesium Protein Fiber Unsaturated Fat Low in Sugar Zero Cholesterol   You can either leave the skins on or take them off. I prefer the skins off mainly because the flavor is less …

Chocolate Lovers Smoothie

Chocolate Lovers Smoothie Recipe: 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk 1 frozen banana 2 Tbsp Cacao Powder 1 Tbsp Coconut Butter 1/2 tsp cinnamon Dash Cayenne Pepper Stevia to Taste I made this smoothie one afternoon when I was having a manic chocolate craving and simply nothing else would do. It was so bad, in fact, that I actually went into my kitchen and threw into my blender any ingredient that looked like it would be good together and amazingly it turned out fantastic!! I hope this smoothie brings you as much relief from your chocolate craving as it did me. Enjoy!

Blueberry Power Protein Smoothie

I’ve been working on this delicious blueberry smoothie for some time and I’ve finally found the perfect combination of ingredients! It’s so good I have been making one almost every single day. As someone who does not eat meat very often I am often asked about my protein intake and how I get enough. I could write a 10 page essay on protein found in vegetables, fruit, nuts and clean plant based products but the short answer is I usually supplement with a protein smoothie. I’m still testing out different plant based protein powders and I plan on doing a post on my favorite brands in the near future, but for the time being I suggest using your plant based protein of choice. I love to eat seasonally and if I had a favorite fruits and vegetables season it would be the end of summer/early fall. Blueberries are such an amazing berry as they are rich in antioxidants that support brain health and memory function plus they’re low on the glycemic index (GI). Blueberries are …

Wellness Wednesday: Love Your Liver Juice

I have been drinking this juice on the reg as of late – it’s soooo good. To be honest I’ve just gotten back into the whole fresh juice thing after taking a little hiatus. I definitely prefer smoothies in the winter over juice because they feel so much heartier with the fiber still in tact but now that temperatures are warmer…or were…I’m digging an afternoon juice instead. My current favorite is a beautiful and yummy combination of beet root, green apple, ginger root and carrot. It’s part earthy, part spicy and part sweet – it rules! Benefits of Beet Root A superfood before there were trendy super foods – beet root is high in nitrates which works like a magic potion in the blood. Not only does it help to lower blood pressure, the nitrates in beet root actually oxygenate the blood improving blood flow function to the heart, brain and muscles. Plus the betanin in beet root helps with skin and liver detoxification. Benefits of Apple Juice No I do not mean the kind that comes out …
